Welcome to Growing Well
We are a targeted and specialist mental health intervention. We champion recovery through outdoor activity in our three Cumbrian market gardens.
20 Years of Growing Well
This year marks a significant milestone for Growing Well, with 2024 being our 20th anniversary. Founded as a social enterprise in 2004, over the past two decades Growing Well has been attended by thousands of beneficiaries from across Cumbria and North Lancashire, who have undertaken therapeutic horticultural activities on our kitchen gardens.

Growing Well offers activity as a powerful alternative (or accompaniment) to talking therapy
We’re a mental health day service that accepts self-referrals and GP/healthcare referrals from individuals experiencing a level of mental ill health that requires ongoing support. People come and participate in our organic market gardening activity on one, regular day per week, with therapeutic support from trained staff.
”Growing Well had faith in my abilities when I didn’t and have allowed me to grow and develop my role throughout my recovery. Their patience is endless but thanks to them, my illness is not.
At Growing Well, the activity IS the therapy
We offer a range of supported, meaningful activity and training, all based around participatory work on the field. When working with our volunteers (our beneficiaries), we focus on three, vital objectives:
- Building emotional resilience
- Developing life skills
- Supporting healthier, more active living
